Duquesne Opposes Slots Casino Near Campus
(KDKA/AP) PITTSBURGH, 8 February, 2006
Duquesne University says it doesn't want a slots casino built near Mellon Arena.
The Pittsburgh Penguins struck a deal with Isle of Capris Casions, which says it will build a $290 million arena, if they are granted the city's only slots license.
That proposed casino would be built in the city's Uptown neighborhood, only blocks from the university's campus. It would also be one part of a billion-dollar development plan for the area around Mellon Arena.
University President Charles Dougherty says studies show that 3 to 5 percent of people with easy access to gambling become addicted.
The university says it supports a new arena for the Penguins and believes whoever gets the casino license should be required to fund the arena.
Duquesne officials just don't want the casino near the Roman Catholic university and its 10,000 students.
